The Microlight Licence

To fly a microlight aeroplane solo unsupervised you must first be in possesion of a National Private Pilots Licence Microlight class, NPPL(M).

To obtain the licence requires the following, before you begin:

  • That you are at least 17 years of age.
  • That you are in possesion of a valid medical declaration of fitness countersigned by your doctor.
  • Instruction

Any flying instruction received must be under the supervision of a Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) rated instructor.

    License Requirements

To gain an NPPL(M) you must complete a minimum of 25 hours flight instruction, including:

  • 10 hours Solo instruction in 9 months
  • 5 hours of Navigation instruction
  • 2 Solo cross country flights of 40nm
  • AND

Within the 12 months prior to your application for a license you must pass 5 written multiple choice tests:

  • Air Law (must be passed before going solo)
  • Principles of Flight
  • Navigation
  • Meteorology
  • Human Performance and Limitations
  • AND

Complete the General Flying Test (GFT) with an examiner, including an oral test about your aircraft.

    Going Solo

The aim of learning to fly is to be able to pilot an aircraft without supervision safely. Although the law specifies minimum requirements, we recognise that each pilot must feel confident about their safety before going solo. Your flying instructor is trained to teach you to fly, they will know when you are safe to go solo and will advise you when you reach that stage.
